Performance Notes -
Mayer bends lot of notes with his FIRST finger, which you almost never see! He also has huge hands and a long reach, but doesn't take advantage of this, as he doesn't use his pinky at all when he solos!
He has awesome vibrato, but as a result, he must keep his other fingers way far from the fretboard, or he would be banging all the other strings with them all the time ... this is normally considered terrible technique, but it doesn't seem to effect his playing negatively at all.
In addition, Mayer does not use a pick!
He is truly a great player in so many ways! many of these licks contain 2 or 3 little licks put together... each little lick excellent in it's own way. so there are actually a lot more than 20 licks in this lesson.
pick your favorite licks to learn, or just learn them all ... until you can play the entire "ride-out" solo in real-time right along with Mayer! ... it is challenging and fun! ... a few of his licks are totally stunning ... he doesn't try to hot-dog it or anything... he is most patient ... and then pounces like a cat... he just consistently plays pure, awesome licks... and always with such sweet tone and feel! ... you can apply these licks to lots of other songs, as well ... fast, or slow... blues, or rock...
